Two Wins in NWKL and Disappointing Loss for County

Posted by Rachel Evans on 18 November 2021

Last weekend we had a match each from our 2nds, 1sts and County Squads.

Saturday morning began with a game between our 2nds and Fusion. We began with a steady start, going goal for goal for the majority of the first half. We executed some great interceptions and forced errors which lead to us inching away by the end of the second half with a score of 24-17. The next half we remained calm and clinical in our play and worked hard to ensure we utilised turnovers. Although we made a few errors due to lack of driving forward, we excellently defended the opposition balls and concluded the game with a score of 47-41 and POTM went to Joanna for her amazing communication within the D and excellent defending! Well done Jo 🎉

1sts were up next with a game against Telstars 2. We got off to a very strong start, taking the ball to goal quickly and efficiently and making signifcant turnovers to give us a solid lead by 10 with a score of 28-18 at the end of the first half. In the second half we decided to challenge ourselves to implement our own targets to practice, for example a set number of intercepts. This meant we ramped up the gears, being more assertive in our play and applying more pressure in defence. We worked consistently to shut down our opposition, force errors to give us turnovers that we converted to goal. The game ended with a fantastic score of 54-25, with a staggering 17 goals being scored in the final quarter alone compared to the oppositions 3 goals. This meant that we denied Telstars from gaining a point! POTM went to our Natalie for her seriously slick looking moves in the circle and bang on point shooting. Congrats Nat 🎉

On Sunday, our county squad headed to Dartford to take on Istead. A slow start meant we lost a few balls in the first quarter, making some forced errors and giving away the ball to the opposition. Unfortunately this meant we were starting on the back foot and were trying to chase throughout the game. Overall, our main issue here was not being quick enough to adapt to the oppositions style of play, not driving forward for balls against Isteads tall team meant they could easily pick off balls that weren't correctly placed. We sadly were unable to create sufficient opportunities for our shooters and needed to adapt choice of ball for getting past long armed defenders. The first half of the game ended with a score of 31-18 to Istead. Although not how we wanted to perform we did adapt within units wihh players being flexible to play alternative positions and we remained positive and supported each other during a difficult match. We left with a disappointing loss of 61-32, despite this we did manage to gain a crucial point overall. POTM went to Natalie (again 🥳)
