Sabina are Back with a Bang after a Double win in NWKL

We are back in business! This weekend saw our first matches back for the 1st and 2nd squads on Saturday in the North-West Kent League.
Our 1st squad was first onto the court with a match against Wealden 1. The match began steadily as both teams got into the swing of their first quarter back. As with every new season, early matches are about working with new players to establish and understand new units and we showed a really strong start to the season. The game began going virtually goal for goal throughout the first half as Sabina led by 1 goal – 19-18. Throughout the second half Sabina demonstrated the true meaning of a championship quarter and pulled out all the stops to widen the lead by adjusting to Wealden’s style of play. We absolutely smashed it with our zonal defence, creating many turnovers and leaving the score at 31-24 at the end of the second quarter. The game concluded with a victory for Sabina, 39-31. Overall, a very successful first match back, as with any team who strives for the best, we have a few things we’d like to work on, but we are incredibly encouraged by the dynamic within new combinations we are seeing so early on. Player of the match went to Cassain for her fabulous shooting and movement in the circle.
Next up we had our 2nd squad who took on Harmony 2. Similarly, to the 1sts, we began steadily as we learned to understand our new formations and units. The first half ended with a score of 15-13 with Sabina slightly behind. However, in true Sabina style, we weren’t going to let an early lead from Harmony stick and we fought back hard as we changed tactic, began driving forward for the ball and taking our time to ensure it safely got to goal. Our defence also worked wonders as communication improve through the third and final quarter, resulting in several turnovers and converted goals. In the third quarter we overtook Harmony taking us to 23-21 and in the final quarter we utilised our new-found rhythm to push forward and close the game on a score of 33-28! A well fought victory and double win for Sabina on our first day back this season! A good insight into things we’d like to work on for the season but again, a really promising start and we know the best is yet to come. Congratulations to Alice for receiving POTM from Harmony, also for her superb shooting and movement in the attacking third. Congratulations ladies – now for our lovely 3rds to make it a Sabina sweep at their first match on Saturday!
